*CRUNCH CRUNCH CRUNCH*
What the hell is that sound? It’s as if a hungry rat has gotten into the deck and is having a feast… Oh look, the tape deck chewed the tape to shit. Awesome! I guess I’ll just start over.
Even with the frustrations of mixtape making, there was something ethereal about the experience of opening a fresh blank tape (BASF or Maxell in my case). Tearing open the cellophane, prying opening the squeaky plastic door and being super psyched to gaze at new sticker design labels. OMG to the FTW.
The last time I pushed the play and record buttons down at the same time was likely around 1998. I was making an angry mixtape for a recent ex-girlfriend. I didn’t write a letter, or want to talk to her (at all or ever again), but I wanted to tell her how I felt with music. Kinda funny to look back on, but I don’t think much has changed today. Making a mix is an wicked opportunity to share a very personal experience.
So here you are: 20/80 Opacity. Find what you might.
Dave Gluzman is good people. 20/80, coincidentally, is also the ratio of bands I’ve heard of to bands I have not heard of on this tape. (While typing up the tracklist, I frequently had to look up whether I was entering the band name or song name.)
